Cuento corto

One is a U.S. state, the other one is a U.S. territory. Both Hawai’i and Puerto Rico are seeing skyrocketing home prices and wages that are not keeping up with inflation. The native population of both places are weighing the benefits vs the harm of wealthy outsiders flocking to paradise while some locals struggle to find housing. Help us cover this story comparing both places so we can better understand the effects of U.S. colonialism in local populations.

La historia

Puerto Rico and Hawai’i share many similarities. Both places were forcibly taken over by the United States more than 100 years ago. Today, their native populations are living the effects of U.S. imperialism. Some say Hawai’i is a cautionary tale for Puerto Rico, others see it as a shining example of what Puerto Rico could be if it fully integrates to the United States. We want to explore both theories and look into the commonalities between the two.

This issue hits home for me because I do live in Hawaii and I am Puerto Rican and still travel to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 because of family. Thank you for bringing these situations to light!
